Palpitations
Palpitations are often described as a sensation of a rapid, fluttering, or pounding heart, which can be felt in the chest, throat, or neck. They may occur at rest or during activity and are usually not dangerous. These symptoms can often occur in healthy individuals, especially during times of stress, anxiety or physical exertion. Additional symptoms may include shortness of breath and feeling dizzy or light-headed. Episodes may be brief, lasting seconds, but occur multiple times throughout the day. If palpitations are persistent or associated with concerning symptoms, further investigations are warranted, which can be facilitated via the Precision Health rapid assessment Clinic.
Patients need to be aware of potential triggers that can cause palpitations that they may not be aware of.
-
Stress, anxiety, or panic attacks: These are common triggers, often accompanied by a feeling of nervousness or fear.
-
Caffeine, nicotine, or alcohol consumption: These substances can stimulate the heart and cause palpitations.
-
Physical exertion or dehydration: Overexertion or not drinking enough fluids can lead to palpitations.
-
Hormonal changes: Changes related to pregnancy, menstruation, or menopause can cause palpitations.
-
Underlying health conditions: Conditions like anaemia, hyperthyroidism, arrhythmias (irregular heart rhythms), and electrolyte imbalances can cause palpitations, though these are less common.

Screening patients with palpitations is crucial in identifying potentially serious health conditions, preventing complications, and ensuring appropriate treatment. It also offers peace of mind for patients, especially when the palpitations are benign. Not all palpitations are caused by dangerous heart conditions, which is important to note:
